The Big Lake Economic Development Corporation (BLEDC) was established in 1999 after the passage of a half-cent sales tax, which funds the corporation. A seven-member Board of Directors oversees and allocates the annual revenues. This funding provides BLEDC the ability to offer economic incentives to businesses that want to enhance or improve our community's atmosphere and the quality of life for all citizens of Big Lake.
The BLEDC is a non-profit corporation specifically governed by the Texas Development Corporation Act of 1979 as a 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We are a Type 4B corporation utilizing Sales and Use Tax at one half of one percent (1/2 of 1%) to undertake projects, including but not limited to projects for the promotion of professional and amateur athletics and sports including stadiums, ball parks, auditoriums, projects related to entertainment, convention, tours, and exhibition facilities, amphitheaters, concert halls, and public parks, park facilities, and events, open space improvements, learning centers, municipal buildings, museums and related stores, restaurant, concession, and automobile parking facilities, and related roads, streets, and water and sewer facilities, recycling facilities, and projects to promote new or expanded business enterprises including public safety facilities, streets, and roads, drainage, and related improvements, demolition of existing structures, and general improvements that are municipally owned, development, or redevelopment of closes military bases, development and expansion of affordable housing, as well as any other improvements or facilities that are related to the above projects, and any other projects that the Board determines will promote new or expanded business enterprises, and the maintenance and operation expenses of the above described projects.
